Keffiyeh Week

Keffiyeh Week

Keffiyeh week is starting Monday, February 5th! Wear your keffiyeh around campus to show your solidarity with the Palestinian cause at a time when Zionism depends on your silence.

The keffiyeh is a symbol of resistance both historically and contemporarily. While the keffiyeh has existed among bedouins for hundreds of years, the black-and-white keffiyah was adopted by Palestinians during the Arab Revolt in Palestine (1936 - 1939) to conceal their identities from the Zionists under the British Mandate.

The keffiyah became a symbol against colonialism and imperialism, leading to its title as “Palestine’s Unofficial Flag“. A ban was imposed on the keffiyah to try and silence this symbol. Palestinians and their allies adorning the keffiyah internationally shows the colossal failure of the ban.

Today, through social media, the keffiyah has become a symbol internationally. To the Arabs, it is a symbol of resisting the Western imperialism that ravaged their countries. To the followers of the Abrahamic faiths, it is a symbol of resisting the oppression that the believers of their faith in their hply lands endure. To most, it has become a humanitarian symbol, one of decolonization, anti-imperialism, anti-apartheid, and protection of the innocent.

Join us for Keffiyah week to show our campuses that we stand by the Palestinians and the oppressed globally.

Speak Out

— Vous pouvez trouver les détails en français en cliquant sur le bouton ci-dessous—

Students! The semester is coming to an end, so let’s use it as an opportunity to speak out about Palestine one more time before we are all swept up in exams.

First, we’re asking you all to wear your keffiyehs to school as a sign of solidarity.

Second, we are asking you to speak to your classes about what is happening in Palestine right now. We have come up with an email template that can be sent to your profs asking permission to speak for a couple of minutes at the beginning or end of class and we have also written a template of what to say when speaking to your class.

We’d love to see you all participate.

With the current ongoing events, it is important to understand the process of decolonization when it comes to the struggle for the liberation of Palestine.

To help us all better understand, we will be meeting with the Ottawa Socialist Literature Group on October 30th at 7pm to discuss these issues through a set of passages from the books “Strategy for the Liberation of Palestine”, “The Wretched of the Earth“, and a couple others as well.

The link to sign up is in our Instagram bio and the location of the event will be shared with those who have signed up prior to the event itself. The texts (to be read pior to the event) are available to read through the link in our Instagram bio.

We hope to see you all there!
